We had great attendance at the first official meeting of the Social Media Club of Utah Valley… About 45 people. Here are some notes from the meeting:
Announcements:
July 18 Combined Summer Party with SMCSLC and SMCUV in Park City – will include family activities, discount passes to Alpine Slide, Tweetup, etc.
SMCUV now has a facebook page as well – smclub of Utah Valley
Agenda:
Jack Hadley proposed moving monthly meetings to the first Thursday of each month, so as to stagger the UV and SLC meetings every two weeks. With that said, the next meeting to be held Thursday, July 2.
Mandy Ogaz gave a brief explanation of Social Media Club in general.
• Started approx. 3 years ago by Kristie Wells and
• Mission: Expand Media Literacy, Share Lessons Learned Among Practitioners, Encourage Adoption of Industry Standards, Promote Ethical Practices through Discussion and Actions
• Benefits of Social Media: being able to associate with other people from around the world who really ‘get it’ – to learn from them, to share with them, to do business with them and to collaborate with them on both commercial and social projects.
• Find more information at socialmedia.org
April then explained the different committees needed to help support our chapter of SMC. Attendees were asked to choose one of two committees: Technology and Programming.
All attendees introduced themselves and then split into groups to organize committees.
Programming Committee:
The Programming committee is to be comprised of the following members:
Programming Committee Chair: April Atwater
Events Chair: Danielle Mahoney
Sponsorship: Still available
Speakers: Bob Carey
Ideas for upcoming events:
• Michael Eager – SEO at Omniture for SEO panel (suggestions by Bob Carey)
• Advertising through text messaging (suggestion by BigBags)
• Idea suggested to use SurveyMonkey to inquire about topic interest
• Mozy – viral advertising (suggestion by BigBags)
• Other possible involvement from OrangeSoda, Novell, Omniture, Mozy, SEO.com
• Possible event locations: UVU library, Corporate Alliance
• Sponsorship dollar amount suggested at $50 per sponsor, or food donations.
July 2 event will be based on Advertising through text messaging. All then mingled and munched on treats from The Chocolate (thechocolatedc.com), and from Sweet Tooth Fairy (thesweettoothfairy.com).
Technology Committee:
During the technology meeting, some of the things that we discussed were:
1. Rotation of SMCUV blog, Twitter and Facebook responsibilities. We decided that we would have one person take responsibility for each of these, then rotate that responsibility quaterly, or every six month.
2. We would like to create an SMCUV badge or button that members could embed on their blogs that links through to the club site, thereby promoting more interest in the club.
3. If we can find venues for our meeting where there is fast internet connections, we would like to use Ustream to start streaming the meeting live. Several people said this is easy to do if we have a good connection.
4. The following list is the people that were willing to help with the technology items:
- Scott & Kathy Cowley (blogging, twitter, anything)
We have officially organized our very own chapter of The Social Media Club. After months of waiting and debating we found it only natural to begin meeting below the point of the mountain. Several tweets and retweets we tweeted and we quickly gathered at CoWork Utah in Orem. Our co-founders Jack Hadley and April Atwater led the brainstorm meeting. Our third co-founder, Tyler Hartle, was at his 2-year old’s birthday party that night so we missed having him there.
We had the pleasure of hearing from Kristie Wells via Skype. We feel so lucky to start this new chapter and appreciate her support. Many things were discussed from what each individual wanted out of the organization to the actual organizing of the club itself. Assignments were given, pizza and cupcakes were devoured and we had an overall great time.
What we hope to gain and give from SMCUV:
* Teach and Learn more about Social Media
* Use Social Media as a marketing alternative or as a complete marketing campaign
* Meet people in person that we communicate with everyday via social media
* Plain old love of Social Media
* Expand personal and professional networks
* Mentorship – want to learn from others in the chapter
* Become more involved in local business
I guess you should know who was present, right. We’ll let you find them on twitter and get to know them yourself!
