3amigos2

We are excited to be learning about some great tools and methods to help create an effective corporate social media account to target your niche market and manage your reputation.

Let’s face it, we all know what Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Youtube are by now. It’s time to learn how to use them effectively as a business. We’ll be sharing with you some of our favorite tools and platforms to manage your social media profiles, evaluate your online presence, find the people talking about your products, services and brand online, and engage them in an effective manner, and track your success!

We’ll also be discussing strategies to help you turn negative online publicity into positive opportunities for your company. Part of this includes learning to use your friends and employees to help creating a positive buzz around your business that others will actually want to talk about.

It’s time to step up your marketing. You know it can be done using social media… we’ll show you how.

Our three awesome social media pulpiteers on this month’s panel are:

NATE BAGLEY

Social Media Coordinator Dude at OrangeSoda. Nate has been working in the SEM industry for about 3 years. In that time, he has mastered the art of paid search, and worked on OrangeSoda’s SEO team while coordinating their social media efforts. He has helped develop search and social media strategies for companies such as Red Mango,Furniture Warehouse, and Maakoa. He recently abnegated his position at OrangeSoda to pursue his personal interests of world domination and flirting with mom bloggers on the Twitter. (atomfly.com)

SETH JENKS

Worker of all things Search and Social at APX Alarm. Seth has an irrefutable reputation for being awesome. After getting his start in social media as the online marketing director at Advent Creative in Cache Valley, Utah, he helped develop (along with @marshallt) the social media and SEO strategy for the Ogden Standard Examiner, to cope with the shifting industry. Seth has had the pleasure of working with and consulting for business all over the nation on the topics of SEO and social media. Seth was also a guest speaker at the University of Colorado with the infamous Gwen Bell of Kirtsy fame, and currently resides in his exclusive, private chateau in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

NATE KARTCHNER

Social Media Evangelist for Mozy. Nathan (aka @jazzcat), a graduate of BYU, has been involved the internet marketing industry for over 5 years. He is well versed in paid search, SEO, affiliate marketing, and social media strategies. Before managing social media at Mozy, he was the Internet Marketing Manager at Sewell Direct. He was recently featured as a panelist at the Digital Marketing World Fall 2009 Virtual Conference as a corporate Twitter expert due to his successes with the @Mozy twitter account. He was recently married and is planning to buy a puppy. (natekartchner.com)

First Official Club Meeting – June 11, 2009

June 12th, 2009 admin 2 comments

We had great attendance at the first official meeting of the Social Media Club of Utah Valley… About 45 people. Here are some notes from the meeting:

Announcements:
July 18 Combined Summer Party with SMCSLC and SMCUV in Park City – will include family activities, discount passes to Alpine Slide, Tweetup, etc.
SMCUV now has a facebook page as well – smclub of Utah Valley

Agenda:
Jack Hadley proposed moving monthly meetings to the first Thursday of each month, so as to stagger the UV and SLC meetings every two weeks. With that said, the next meeting to be held Thursday, July 2.

Mandy Ogaz gave a brief explanation of Social Media Club in general.
• Started approx. 3 years ago by Kristie Wells and
• Mission: Expand Media Literacy, Share Lessons Learned Among Practitioners, Encourage Adoption of Industry Standards, Promote Ethical Practices through Discussion and Actions
• Benefits of Social Media: being able to associate with other people from around the world who really ‘get it’ – to learn from them, to share with them, to do business with them and to collaborate with them on both commercial and social projects.
• Find more information at socialmedia.org

April then explained the different committees needed to help support our chapter of SMC. Attendees were asked to choose one of two committees: Technology and Programming.
All attendees introduced themselves and then split into groups to organize committees.

Programming Committee:
The Programming committee is to be comprised of the following members:
Programming Committee Chair: April Atwater
Events Chair: Danielle Mahoney
Sponsorship: Still available
Speakers: Bob Carey

Ideas for upcoming events:
• Michael Eager – SEO at Omniture for SEO panel (suggestions by Bob Carey)
• Advertising through text messaging (suggestion by BigBags)
• Idea suggested to use SurveyMonkey to inquire about topic interest
• Mozy – viral advertising (suggestion by BigBags)
• Other possible involvement from OrangeSoda, Novell, Omniture, Mozy, SEO.com
• Possible event locations: UVU library, Corporate Alliance
• Sponsorship dollar amount suggested at $50 per sponsor, or food donations.

July 2 event will be based on Advertising through text messaging.
All then mingled and munched on treats from The Chocolate (thechocolatedc.com), and from Sweet Tooth Fairy (thesweettoothfairy.com).

Technology Committee:

During the technology meeting, some of the things that we discussed were:

1. Rotation of SMCUV blog, Twitter and Facebook responsibilities. We decided that we would have one person take responsibility for each of these, then rotate that responsibility quaterly, or every six month.

2. We would like to create an SMCUV badge or button that members could embed on their blogs that links through to the club site, thereby promoting more interest in the club.

3. If we can find venues for our meeting where there is fast internet connections, we would like to use Ustream to start streaming the meeting live. Several people said this is easy to do if we have a good connection.

4. The following list is the people that were willing to help with the technology items:

- Scott & Kathy Cowley (blogging, twitter, anything)

- Dylan & Leah Higginbotham (creating badges)

- Adam Weight (blogging, promoting)

- Dan Patterson (guest posts, twitter)

- Troy Skeen (anything)

- Thom Allen
