In case you missed it….

April 9th, 2010 No comments

We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support the April SMCUV meeting. We had a wonderful time and were so lucky to hear from such an amazing and knowledgeable presenter, Josh “Shua” Peters. This month’s meeting was held at Thanksgiving Point in the Garden Room, and we couldn’t have asked for anything better. It was beautiful and the staff made us feel welcome. We are grateful for LotusJump for sponsoring our event, which meant we were able to enjoy a delicious buffet catered by Thanksgiving Point!

Just to give you a small recap, in case you weren’t able to attend (you missed out!):

We started the meeting with introductions and were able to get to know more of our fellow Utah Valley social media lovers.

Next, we heard from LotusJump who spoke briefly on utilizing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) software that allows users to perform their own SEO. This LotusJump program compiles tasks that are categorized (buzz tasks, question and answer, content generations tasks, etc.) and teaches the user how to get the most out of their own SEO management. Small businesses and individuals can use these programs to market their products and generate traffic to their websites.

Finally, we heard from our key note speaker, Josh “Shua” Peters. Josh gave an exciting presentation on G.L.A.M, which stands for:

Goals

Listening

Actions

Measurement

We spent time on each piece to emphasize its specific importance in social media as it applies to our businesses. Our goals need to be somewhat flexible, but be in line with our mission as a business. It is important to listen not only to our customers, but what everyone on the web is saying about our company. If we listen, we will be better able to respond appropriately. Our actions are determined by setting our goals and our content is created by what we have heard after we listen. Finally, we need to measure our progress and our ROI. What did we gain, what did we profit, and what do we need to change?

Josh is also the co-author of Twittfaced, which can help further your knowledge of how to really utilize social media for your company.

Ultimately, our meeting was very successful and we were grateful to all of you for your attendance and support. We hope to see you next month!

SMCUV March Event – Ignite SLC

February 21st, 2010 No comments
Ignite Salt Lake

Ignite Salt Lake

We’re rounding the bend to the end of the month, which probably means everyone is wondering what in blazes we have planned for March.

March’s scheduled SMCUV event actually overlaps with one of the coolest events of the year… Ignite Salt Lake. We decided that rather than competing with such a cool once-a-year event, we’d join forces and lend them our support.

Ignite consists of an awesome lineup of speakers who tackle a variety of subjects. Each speaker is given 5 minutes and 20 slides that auto-forward every 15 seconds.  You can learn everything from “how to survive a zombie apocalypse” to “how to see through walls.”

Basically it will be a night of fun, education and random presentations to make you think and laugh.

Ignite Salt Lake goes from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at the following address:

The Stateroom
(21+ only)
638 South State Street
Salt Lake City, UT

See you there! (If you’re over 21.)

SMCUV’s Leadership and Goals for 2010

After a fantastic year of many, many volunteer hours, great efforts, and successful events, the founders of SMCUV (Jack Hadley, April Atwater and Tyler Hartle)  handed off the reigns to a brand new batch of ambitious social media aficionados last week. Without the efforts of our founders, all the exciting things  we have planned for this next year would not be possible, and we’d like to thank them graciously.

If you’d be so kind, take some time to leave a comment at the bottom of this page to let us know 3 things that you are hoping to gain from SMCUV this year.

Are there topics you would like to cover?

Are there specific people you’d like to see come speak?

Are there social media platforms you would like to learn more about?

We’re all about catering to your needs, so please help us by giving some direction in the comments at the bottom of this post.

Taking the reigns as President of SMCUV is Seth Jenks. We’ll be writing up a feature on Seth soon so we can all get to know him, his interests, and his goals for the club.

Bailey Bouchard was named the head of the publicity and events committee.

Joanie Atwater is heading up the sponsorship and facilities committee.

We’re excited to see the great things in store for SMCUV in 2010. See you in February!

Join Our 2010 Planning Meeting This Thursday, January 7th!

January 4th, 2010 6 comments

2010calendar

Hello social media club friends. Happy new year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season!

We’re excited to get rolling again with SMCUV! We will be holding an important planning meeting THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 7TH, AT 7:00PM, at the BELLE MONET CLUBHOUSE in PLEASANT GROVE. The address is: 581 South 2220 West, Pleasant Grove. Thanks to Seth Jenks (@sethjenks) for arranging this place for us to meet. The Tahitian Noni folks decided not to be so accommodating any more and wanted to start charging us to meet there. Too bad.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We feel like the success of our club will depend on how many people we can get to participate in planning and carrying out club activities. Many hands make light work! So, if you think you can carve out a little time this year to help, please come to the meeting and get on one of our committees! We got some decent traction in 2009… As you know, we only started early last year. But, we would like to get a ton more traction in ’10!

So, PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR PLANNING MEETING ON THURSDAY!

If you have any questions, contact me, @jack_hadley . See you then! Or, questions about the location of the meeting to @sethjenks.
